The bus system costs many times what you parents pay. Sky Tavern pays the costs of the buses, the insurance, and drivers, not Washoe County School District. The difference in what Mom and Dad put into the bucket each week is fundraised every fall. There have been years when the buses emptied the bank. So far, we are good this season.
GO/NO GO MESSAGE:
What you need to know is first off if Sky Tavern is open on Saturday or Sunday. This is the GO/NO-GO message. The message can be found in your email, on the front page of the website, skytavern.org or by calling the office phone at 775 323 5125. We make the Go or No-Go call by 6:30 am each planned opening day. We have made the wrong call more than once, opened when it was miserable or closed when blue skies appeared by 10 am. If we call No-Go, then we always try to make up that day later in the season. If we say No-Go on Saturday, Sunday may still be a Go. No, the bus ticket does NOT roll over to the Sunday. It is two lists and we have to stick to that.
Bus Tickets
Each week you will get an email reminder to go onto skytavern.org and buy a bus ticket. This absolutely has to be done by Wednesday at 5 PM for each week. The sheets of who is riding get sorted and sent to WCSD Wednesday night by Lythia, the office Mom, right after her kids go to bed. Tickets are $13 a day. Every kid needs one. By one for the kids for Saturday or Sunday. If a kid wants to come up both days, two tickets.
We started this system of buying each ride individually as opposed to buying all of the rides upfront for a few reasons:
1. We needed to keep buses full. A bus with 10 kids in it costs the same as a full bus for Sky Tavern. Sky Tavern was close to closing because of bus costs not that long ago. Can't do that.
2. Keeping buses full is good for winter. Sky Tavern needs to do its part on climate change. We like winter.
3. Kids need to change days and locations. Baseball, soccer, and music seemed to change kids' schedules a lot.
4. Some kids wanted to come both days every weekend. The old system just didn't let that happen.
5. If you miss some days, you save.
BUS TICKET AGREEMENT REMINDERS:
“NO GO” bus tickets roll over to the next week of “GO” operation, no refunds. If the ticket is not used the following “GO” weekend, the ticket is forfeited. A rollover is only due to Sky Tavern being a ‘NO GO”. If a kid has a ticket but doesn't get on the bus, that ticket is lost.
Children who participate in the bus program arrive at their bus pick-up location (Reed High School or Wooster High School/ Roger Corbett) no later than 7:00 am. All Skis and Snowboards are required to be in a bag. This keeps the edges from cutting the bus seats. When the buses get to Sky Tavern everything comes off the bus and goes into the lodge. There are racks all over the lodge for gear bags. The buses go back down the hill for the day. At 2:30 the bus kids start heading back to the buses. We do not let the bus leave until every child is accounted for. Bus Students are returned to the school they got on at between 3:15-4pm. Please pick up your child.
If you drive up and pick your child up from Sky Tavern, you MUST check your child out at the front desk prior to 2:30 pm. There is a form we need filled out so we know where the kid went and with whom. This is just like a school field trip. If there are no spots left on your preferred bus stop location, OR if you’re past the 5pm Wednesday weekly deadline, please CALL for availability.
BUS LOCATIONS:
The buses pick up and drop off at two locations, Wooster and Reed High Schools. The Wooster stop has been moved a few hundred feet to the elementary school right behind the Wooster ball fields. Roger Corbett, 1901 Villanova Dr. Click here for a map.
TO RIDE THE BUS:
- A child must be registered as a bus kid with that badge (If you don't have the badge yet it can be picked up at the front desk of the lodge. The kids can still get on the bus until they pick it up.)
- To be registered as a bus kid they must be 9 years or older.
- Their skis and snowboards must be in a bag to protect the bus from cuts. If you don't have one yet we have some to borrow for the season. Ask the front desk.
- They must be on the roster for that day by having purchased a ticket for the bus for that day and location. IF YOU MISS THE DEADLINE, CALL THE OFFICE. LATE FEES APPLY.
- Be nice. This is a privilege, not a right. Being nice to the driver and bus supervisors can go a long way in life, please. The bus driver is a WCSD bus driver during the week doing a second shift for your kids. The bus supervisor is your neighbor.
- Bus Supervisors must reserve a seat online!*
- Be ready at the pick-up location at the right time. We start the first week by saying 7 am. The bus supervisors and drivers may change it once everyone gets the system down. Watch the emails, please!
- Kids get back on the bus at 2:30 is the plan. The idea is to have them back at the school no later than 4. BE AT THE SCHOOL AT 3:15. Please pick up your child. Please.

Thank you to some of our donors to help with the cost. You can't get rid of your kids for $13 a day anywhere else. Get to the bus pick-up by 7 am the first week for sure!
