So what’s next?

If you are new to Sky Tavern it all may seem a bit overwhelming since you most likely got the sales pitch about how we teach skiing and snowboarding with the Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, and many Grandparents making this happen. We run a ski area for the kids and “we “ are you included. That’s enough to get your head spinning. Have some wine. And yes, this is how I talk to you, the members of Sky Tavern. I value you more than I can say and try to talk to you like we are having coffee together.

Time to break it all down to some chewable size pieces. Here is how it starts.

There will be lots of orientation gatherings before we open. It is a time to ask questions, get some answers, learn some skills, and make new friends. Each one is a few hours in a borrowed building around town or at Sky Taven. Most are in the evenings, all very informal and a very good idea to attend. Lots of opportunities to clear the vision.

The plan as of the end of October.

Thursday, November 9th. Old Plumas Gym. 7 pm. Let's start with 4 and 5-year-old skiers, SkyKids. They are short and cute. If you have a REGISTERED SkyKid you need to come to this. A SkyKid is a 4 or 5-year-old skier only. Got one? Best show up to this night . Little snowboarders are called Grommets. Their meeting is later. Directions to the gym are below. Kris, Jenn, Lorna, and Kat are the major Moms in this program. They got this down. Playing being a dinosaur to follow.

Saturday, November 11, 9 a.m. to noon at Sky Tavern. Returning Ski and Snowboard instructors. Time to shake out those cobwebs and pick up pointers on the different ways we are going to approach kids and snow this season. There are some changes and some really cool tools that we need to get in your bag of tricks. Donuts included.

Wednesday, November 15, 6 to? pm. Ski Swap Building. (Directions below) Race program orientation. All race programs, Tahoe League, and Far West. If you have a young one that is even considering racing, be there. Bring those kids to this one. The coaches need to meet them.

Thursday evening, November 16. 7 to? PM. In the Ski Swap Building by Sams Club. (more about Ski Swap below) Night 1 for the new instructors. We have some of the most skilled instructors in the area volunteering at Sky Tavern. They are going to start passing on their knowledge to you. You think you can’t teach but you can. If you can get down the beginner hill, you can teach on the beginner hill. Someone did this for you way back when. Time to play it forward. Fair warning. A big sales pitch on being an instructor is coming. FYI, we do not toss you out there all by yourself with a bunch of kids crossing their tips and giving up and making snow angels. Been doing this for a long time. There is a proven procedure. You can do this!

You get a break to go see Grandma at Thanksgiving and then we get into full meeting/training mode. Every Thursday there is a different group getting together in the Old Plumas gym each week this year. More about which group, and when later. Watch the emails, please.

Some of Sky Tavern's rental "Stuff"

This is a sport that takes a lot of stuff. There are right ways and wrong ways to get that stuff.

The wrong way. No hand-me-downs from distant relatives who skied in the '70s or thrift store gear, please. PLEASE! Neon onesies and straight 210 cm skis are out.

Clothing. Bobos for the latest slope fashions. Mary can dress anyone to the 9s. For the rest of us the big box clothing stores or even better, Sky Tavern Ski Swap.

Helmets. Ditto as above. (Everyone skiing or snowboarding at Sky Tavern wears a helmet, everyone)

Skis, boots, snowboards etc. Two big ways to go, buy or rent. In the mood to buy the latest stuff, go see Pat at Bobos or Paul or Theo or anyone of a number of our friends down there. Want to buy last year’s stuff that is still brand new at 50% + off? Sky Tavern Ski Swap.

You just moved here from Kona and are not entirely sure about this snow sport? Kids are growing like crazy? Season leases are made for you. Rent the stuff for the season, and give it back in April. Sky Tavern has a rental program. I used to say Sky’s was sort of a second-tier collection of equipment. The ski shops, Bobos included, had newer gear, zippier gear. Not so sure that is true any longer. Bobos does have new stuff to rent. Need that, go see Harley in the rental department. She is my niece, cute and willing to get you outfitted.

But Colin at Sky Tavern has worked for years to up our game with equipment. The skis and boots we have are pretty ^&*! good since he has worked the industry for the best of donations and deals and has sorted and prepped 1000s of skis. Some are brand new, some are a few years old, and some needed work. If it was not up to his call, he turned it into furniture or a shot ski. I paid $500 for the same skis we will rent you for under $100 for the year. The inventory is over 2000 skis and boards and we start season leases in two weeks. I promise to be more timely in telling you how and when and ask for some help getting these on kids' and parents' feet.

Ski Swap.

Ski Swap is really a ski sale. We have vendors that come in and set up in what is now the Spirit Store down by Sams Club. They bring everything you would need for winter from clothes, helmets, goggles, gloves, socks, skis, and boards. Some is new, unsold equipment from the last few years from stores, some is used. All is a great deal. Come shop.

People can also bring in gear to sell. As long as it is still good to go, we will put it out on the floor to sell. You make money, Sky Tavern holds a little money. New this year is mountain bike gear in their own area. Go look in the garage for stuff. Bring it down to sell.

It is also how we get the “Band Back Together”. It is really the kick-off to the Sky Tavern Winter Season. Save the Dates! You will be glad you did.

Talk to you more later,

When my grandfather, Harold, was in his 90’s, he told me he didn’t think any different than when he was a great deal younger, but everything from chopping wood to arguing with the DMV just took more effort and time to get done. I think I am getting there. I have been trying to get this email done for the better part of a week.

Sorry.

Bill
