It is with a heavy heart that we announce the untimely passing of Sky Tavern Board Member and Fundraising Committee Chair Tony Santo. Please see release attached below:
Reno, August 18, 2023 –Sky Tavern today announced that Tony Santo, Fundraising Committee Chairman, Sky Tavern, Board of Director, and Marce Herz Foundation Chairman, passed away unexpectedly on August 17, 2023.
Yale Spina, Sky Tavern Board Chairman, said, "It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Tony Santo." Tony joined Sky Tavern as our Fundraising Chairman in 2020 and became the chairman of our organization's dedicated fundraising subsidiary, The Marce Herz Foundation, in 2021. As a donor himself and the foundation's leader, his mission was to help ensure the long-term sustainability for the future of Sky Tavern. His efforts were instrumental in raising 2.4M for snowmaking improvements at Sky Tavern.
Tony had a commanding presence on the mountain throughout the year. You could find him on the trails skiing, biking or joking with volunteers in the parking lot. Tony was a proud father, so he understood the value of recreation as a family. He made an impact on many children by skiing alongside them, and you would find him making laps on the chairlift with the kiddos. Spina further states, "I would ask Tony if he wanted to go for a ride at the bike park. Tony knew that was code for raking and shoveling; he was never afraid to roll up his sleeves and get to work". Tony was a positive influence on the many, young and old.
Spina continued, "Tony was a strong and impactful leader, colleague, and friend. He will be greatly missed. On behalf of the Truckee Meadows Community and Sky Tavern, I extend our deepest sympathies to the Santo family."
