January 8-9 Plans. Dryland For New Kids

  • Thursday, 6th January, 2022

Sky Tavern
January 6, 2022
We are getting going and there is a lot to talk about. Get a glass of something and read on, please. It is important because knowledge is what makes it work. All of this info is on the website and a whole lot more.

  • Do not worry if the badges have not shown up in your mailbox yet. We have a way around it for opening weekend. You don't need them this weekend.
  • The biggest limiting factor is the parking lot. Please come in the second entrance by the rental shop and follow your neighbor directing you. Maybe if you are a returning parking person come help. The parking is why we are doing all this twice over the weekend.
  • Kids and instructors bring your skis and boards. Time to get on snow.
  • More instructors mean more fun for kids. Even if you didn't sign up as an instructor come give it a try. Sky Tavern needs more instructors!
  • We are still at that MASKS IN THE LODGE situation.

The Tentative Schedule.

Everything depends on the weather. Always check the emails, Facebook, and the Announcements page. Everything happens at Sky Tavern Ski Area, not in Reno.

January 8-9. Repeats each day except for SkyKids. SkyKids (the 4 & 5-year-old's program) is only Saturday
9- 10 am "Dryland training"
9 am - ? Instructor training
9:30 Support Member Orientation
1:30 2nd Support Member Orientation if needed

January 15-16
Week 1 This is when all the fun starts is the idea.

Instructor 1st on the snow training. Dryland Training for kids, Support Member Orientation. There is something for all new and some returning members. Because we have a lot of sign-ups this season we are repeating everything twice (except SkyKids). See below. Sunday will be the same as Saturday. If you are new, one day is enough. Registration is pretty big. We have had large seasons but this is one it seems everyone wants to get outside.

We tried filming orientation night. Not so good results so please click below and read Lythia's List. It is how to make it through the first days of what you will remember forever. It will be confusing and chaotic until we all fix it. 40% of you are new but that leaves 60% that can guide.

Everyone new please read Lythia's List by clicking the button.

Let's talk about SkyKids first because this can be confusing.

SkyKids is a program in a program. It is the group of 4 and 5-year-olds only. If your child is older, they are not a SkyKid. If you have a SkyKid then you are a SkyKid parent. Some SkyKids have more than one SkyKid parent and some SkyKid parents have more than one SkyKid. If you are a SKYKID PARENT that is your position, job, task. You will be busy. Other parents can help in SkyKids too. They will be skiing or snowboarding during Dryland on Saturday. Bring the skis and boards. Kris Jones is the boss. Play nice to her, please.

This email is about how Sky Tavern works and your part in it. The first thing you need to know is that there are 38 departments at Sky, most run by volunteer members. To make it simple the main ones are;

Ski School, Eric Ruud
PSIA Training, Frank Deras
Snowboard School, Oli Lieder
SkyKids , Kris Jones
SkyBridge, Eaton Dunkleburger
Ski Patrol, Mike Oehlert
And all the Support Positions run by the 'Moms".
Kitchen, Donna Reynolds
Front Desk, Teri Henderson
Parking, Alicia Berkbigler
Class Organizers and Scanning, Jen Cauble & others. Big Job!
Ambassadors, Teri Henderson

The Dryland Training 9 am Saturday or Sunday for kids that have never been on snow. The exception is SkyKids (age 4-5). They are Saturday only. Age 6 and above dryland happens both days. Sunday will be less crowded!

Dryland is the phrase we use for an extra bit of training kids that have never been on snow can get. It is called that because when I was a kid at Sky Tavern it was done at Idlewild Park and we practiced on goose poop. We moved it to SkyTavern years ago.

Kids get Level 1 taught, the very basics of moving on snow. You need your skis or snowboards. Time to learn to slide right!

It starts at 9 am and lasts an hour or so. We use the new carpet lifts and we do leave them on afterward for kids to practice on. This is not required by any means. It is just an extra time for kids that have not ridden on snow. It repeats Saturday and Sunday. Kids that go through this usually start the next weekend at Level 2.

Instructor Training. This is super important!

Someone much wiser than me once spoke that the road to immortality is found by passing on knowledge.

Sky Tavern is a teaching area done by you. We put a huge amount of pride into what we teach and you will feel that too after a kid makes it up a level because of your effort!

This is for all instructors, everyone. Pick a day. Bring your gear. Time to get on snow. It is also for those of you that signed up as Support Members but you know how to ski or ride and maybe only a bit. Show up. Give it a go, please. We need instructors. More instructors equal smaller classes equals bigger smiles.

If it doesn't work out go back to cooking hotdogs but the smiles are much bigger out on the slopes. You have nothing to lose by coming up and listening to the certified instructors and riding for a while. Years ago the only way to be an adult at Sky Tavern was to be an instructor. Please help. It is a morning job everyone wants.

Eric is running the ski instructors with a bunch of help from Dan and others. (If you do end up loving ski instructing then we pass you on to Frank at PSIA to make you super good. He doesn't use the snow to ski, just floats.)

Oli runs the snowboard instruction with a perpetual grin. He has a different idea for Saturday and Sunday for instructors but still starting at the same 9 am

Support Members, those that make the ski area go.
Support orientations will happen while Dryland and Instructors are out. A guess would be at 9:30 and right after lunch. You can also just talk to the returning folks. They will tell you the real truth of the old days of the rope tow.

If you have a SkyKid (4 or 5 years old) your job is SkyKids only! Sorry to repeat but this gets lost all the time!

Support Members/Members Only

This is where you fall if instructing is just not right for you even after you tried. The real power here is the Moms of Sky Tavern not unlike the rest of the world. They have put together a list of jobs and tasks. There are lots more and most of you returning parents have a pretty good idea where you fit in. There are Dads that have been in the kitchen for years and Moms that have run Class Organizers equally as long. Go there even if the list is full. We need experience this season. Yes, you can move around. Talk to the front desk Mom.

All of these positions are vital and nothing is written in granite except for this.
Everyone helps. If you hide in your car or in the lodge on your computer, you will be called out to help. Stuff goes on all day. Helping Donna clean the kitchen in the afternoon is just as important and needed as checking lift tickets at 9. There is no such thing as someone else's problem and please treat all the kids as your own.
Have fun. Make it fun. If not fun try again.

The Lodge still needs a lot of setup attention. Read that as shovel, lift and tote labor. This whole place is a barn raising by the community. If you have time during the day Thursday or Friday your help will not be turned away. I am certain we will still be doing stuff Saturday and Sunday to get ready.
Thanks.
